People are using gas more than ever today, as it is found in homes and industrial areas. It has become a resource of importance because of its widespread use. In this post, you will find tips on how to check if your house is connected to a gas supply. In addition, you will be taken through the process of connecting your house to a gas supply whether it is a new house or an existing one. So, read on to find out more!

Start by Checking with a Gas Supplier

Verifying if your house is connected to a gas supply is very simple. All you need to do is to check with the Gas Network Company in your area if your suburb is covered by their gas supply.

If you are in areas like South Australia, Victoria, Northern Territory, Queensland and North-South Wales, you can visit the website of the Australia Gas Network. The company owns gas distribution systems in most of the towns in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Rockhampton, Albury, Brisbane, Alice, Whyalla, Bundaberg, Spring, and Rockhampton.

Therefore, to check if your area is covered by their gas network, head to their website, input the name of your suburb and it will tell you if your area is covered by their gas supply.

What Do I Do to Connect my Property to a Gas Supply?

A Newly Built Home Gas Supply

Step 1: Talk to your Property Developer

Inform your property developer of your intention to have a gas supply in your house and they will make arrangements to get that done. In summary, here is what the property developer will do:

  • Contact a gas network company in your area requesting a service line. A service line is the connection from the gas mains in your street to the gas meter on your house.
  • While constructing your house, they will choose a nice place for the gas meter. This will be chosen during a visit from the person who will do the meter installation. If you have a preferred location for the meter installation, ensure that you inform the meter installer on the day of the installation. You also have to make sure that there is no obstruction preventing safe and easy access to the house like debris or pets.
  • The property developer will also make arrangements with a gas installation company like Hero Plumbing to help in installing gas pipes, meters and other gas appliances at your property.

Step 2: Choose a Gas Retailer

The gas retailer is responsible for providing gas to your home and sending you bills for your usage at the end of the month. You will need to set up an account with your preferred gas retailer.

Step 3: Enjoy your Gas

Now that your gas system is up and working, you can enjoy its benefits, whether it is for cooking, heating or boiling water.

Existing House Gas Connection (New Gas Line)

Step 1: Contact a Gas Distribution Company

The first thing you need to do is contact a gas network company in your area and confirm if your area is covered by their gas supply.

Step 2: Contact a Gas Fitter

Gasfitters are professionals who work on gas pipelines, appliances and equipment. They can install new pipes or maintain existing ones. Propane distributors sell products like heaters to mechanical and service companies that focus more on residential buildings while commercial structures come under the purview of engineers. Industrial complexes employ plumbers who strictly work for them only.

Step 3: Choose a Location for Meter Installation

The gas distribution company can help you choose a good location to install your gas meter, but if you have a preferred location for the installation, inform your meter installer before they start gas metering installation.

Step 4: Installation of Gas Pipes and Gas Appliances

At this point, both the gas pipes and appliances will be installed in no particular order. Ensure that you have an accurate plan of your building at hand as the gas contractor may need to verify details about how pipes were installed in the house before they start excavating.

It is also important to ask the gas fitter how long the pipe and appliance installation will take so that you plan ahead for the gas outage that may happen for a couple of days, get a temporary source to ensure gas availability or if possible, temporarily relocate till the installation and gas connections are complete.

Step 5: Installing a Gas Meter

In this stage, the gas meter is installed at the location agreed by you and the meter installer.

Step 6: Choose a Gas Retailer or Provider

The gas retailer is responsible for providing gas to your home and sending you bills for your usage at the end of the month. You will need to set up an account with your preferred gas retailer.

Step 7: Enjoy your Gas

Once your gas system is up and running, you can now enjoy it to the fullest to cook, heat or boil water and warm your indoor space.

Choose a Qualified Gas Fitter for your Gas Plumbing Needs

It’s best to utilise a team of skilled and certified professionals who are able to provide professional gas installation services.

When it comes to your plumbing needs, it’s important to choose a company you can trust! Whether it’s a small or big job, a well renowned gasfitter will provide upfront and transparent prices. They may offer a lifetime warranty on workmanship, so there should be no surprises after the job is complete.

By hiring a fully licenced plumber, this will ensure quick response times, as they will likely have 24-hour availability. This gives you peace of mind that they’re always here for emergencies at all hours.

I called Hero Plumbing to unblock a shower drain and was unable to get a quote over the phone, but Sam the owner was here same day. After his first try, he made quick work of the blockage. I opted to also get the acid cleaner stuff poured down. Sam had run out, but made a trip to go pick some up to finish the job. If you opt for this treatment make sure you can easily air the bathroom as it’s extremely strong and produces a lot of fumes. Great Service and Honest Pricing.

I knew Sam when he was working alone. And from the first time I was pleasantly surprised by his work. A little later I found out that he has his own business. I am very happy about that. And I am very glad for myself that I have such a company that I can always rely on.

Thank you for your work. People need you very much.
